Life story
A Providence Landholder
Thomas Hopkins was born in 1650 in Providence, Rhode Island, and was made a freeman there in 1672, the same year he was rewarded ten shillings for apprehending an Indigenous man during a period of colonial unrest. He built a substantial farm — by 1688 his taxable property included six head of cattle, two mares, pigs, and 162 acres of land, roughly a tenth of it improved. In his April 1711 will Thomas divided his considerable landholdings among his sons Thomas, William, Joseph, Zebedee, and Ezekiel, with ten pounds apiece to his daughters Elizabeth, Mary, and Rachel. He died April 21, 1718; his estate, appraised at nearly 110 pounds, included farm tools, livestock, a gun, and a sword.
