Life story

A Colorado Girlhood

Beulah Grahm was born on September 26, 1897, at home in Fort Morgan, Morgan County, Colorado. She trained as a teacher at the State Normal School in Bellingham, Washington (graduating in 1922 with additional coursework at the College of Puget Sound) before marrying Edward Byron Loomis at the Church of the Holy Communion in Tacoma on August 26, 1922.

Home, Garden, and Grandchildren

Beulah's granddaughter Jean remembered her as “a quiet artistic woman who liked harmony and beauty around her,” devoted to gardening, baking, and handicrafts — she taught Jean to knit and passed down her banana bread recipe, and was an early enthusiast of organic gardening, juicing her own carrots and burying fish for fertilizer in her cornfield. She was active for years in the Tillers & Toilers Garden Club of Tacoma and, after Edward's retirement, kept detailed travel journals of their trips through the American Southwest, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. Beulah died in Tacoma on November 1, 1969; her garden club planted a pink flowering dogwood in her memory.
