Life story

A Scituate Widow's Household

Elizabeth Jenks was born August 24, 1694, and married Ezekiel Hopkins, later settling in Scituate, Rhode Island. Widowed by the time she wrote her will in September 1763, she noted that her other children had already received their portions of her late husband's estate, and left her remaining household goods — bedding, furniture, and pewter — to be divided between her daughters Patience Seamans and Mary Baxter, naming her son Daniel executor. Elizabeth died in the spring of 1768; the detailed inventory of her modest household taken after her death, everything from feather beds and linen sheets to a brass kettle, sheep, cows, and hogs, reflects the self-sufficient farm economy of colonial Rhode Island.
