Life story

An Iowa Girlhood

Anna “Annie” Frances Brown was born on September 11, 1864, in Jesup, Iowa, and grew up in New York and Nebraska before it was her idea, around 1884, for the family to move to Colorado and take up timber claims. She married Charles Jay Grahm in Yuma, Colorado, on March 4, 1890, and the couple farmed sugar beets near Fort Morgan for two decades, Annie making most of her family's clothing by hand.

Fox Island

In 1910 the family moved to Washington State, settling on a strawberry farm on Fox Island, where Annie kept the household running through decades without electricity or refrigeration — elaborate handmade Christmas preparations included popcorn strings, paper chains, and berries gathered from the hillside. Her daughter Fern wrote that Annie was never quite the same after her son Clarence's death in 1922. On August 30, 1926, feeling unwell but refusing to see a doctor, Annie carried a basket of produce to new neighbors and collapsed shortly after arriving; she died before her husband could reach her.
