Thomas Hopkins

Born Abt in Providence, Rhode Island. Abt. He married Abt and worked as commissioner. He died 1684 at Littleworth Plantation, Oyster Bay, New York.

A Rhode Island Founder

Thomas Hopkins was baptized April 7, 1616, in England and emigrated to America around 1635; when his mother died in 1622 he and his siblings had already gone to live with their uncle, William Arnold. Thomas was among the thirty-nine signers of the 1640 agreement establishing a government for the colony of Rhode Island, and settled in Providence, where he became a freeman in 1655 and went on to serve repeatedly as a commissioner, a deputy to the colony's General Court, and a member of Providence's town council through the 1650s to the early 1670s. Around 1675 he moved to the Littleworth Plantation at Oyster Bay, New York, where he died in 1684, living out his final years in his daughter-in-law's household.
