Life story
A Rhode Island Freeman
Thomas Wood settled in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, by the mid-1650s, buying and inheriting land there and becoming a freeman of the colony in 1658. He served as a sergeant during King Philip's War around 1676, for which he was later granted a hundred acres in East Greenwich, and afterward moved to Swansea, Massachusetts, where he served as a deputy to the general assembly and as a surveyor of highways. Thomas divided his Swansea land among his sons William, George, and Jonathan in his final years, and died around 1703.
