Life story
Dorchester's Bailiff
Robert Dibble sailed for America aboard the ship Recovery in 1634 and settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts, where he became a freeman in 1635 and was appointed the town's bailiff in March 1637, responsible for collecting fines and levies — a post he was reappointed to for at least two further years. He and his son held thirty acres near the boundary with Roxbury, along with several smaller granted parcels closer to town, and in 1641 Robert signed a petition to establish a free school in Dorchester.
