Life story

Born in the Gold Rush

Edward Byron Loomis was born on May 5, 1899, at home in Skagway, Alaska, during the Klondike gold rush — locally remembered as the first white child born in the town — to Isaac Hayes Loomis and the Swedish-born Augusta Swanson. His parents' marriage ended in divorce, and Edward grew up largely with his mother around Puget Sound. He tried to enlist in the Washington National Guard in 1917 but was discharged for flat feet, then served with the 102nd Field Signal Battalion during the First World War, and afterward worked briefly as a U.S. Forest Service ranger near Port Angeles.

A Career in Oil

After a decade bouncing between clerking jobs — a Tacoma bank, a bindery, the Northern Pacific Railway, a Port Angeles rail depot that closed in the Depression — Edward joined General Petroleum Company of California in Seattle in 1934 and stayed with the company (later absorbed into Mobil Oil) for the rest of his career, rising from clerk to chief clerk to field superintendent over three decades. He married Beulah Grahm at the Church of the Holy Communion in Tacoma on August 26, 1922. An avid company bowler, he was regularly his team's top scorer through the late 1930s.

Travels in Retirement

Edward retired around 1965, and he and Beulah spent much of the following years travelling — keeping detailed journals of road trips through Mexico, the American Southwest, and Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, and voyages by ship to Hawaii, Jamaica, and up the Inside Passage to Alaska. He remained an active bowler into his seventies, competing in senior tournaments, and kept close ties with his grandchildren, regularly hosting them at his home in Manchester and then Tacoma, Washington. Edward died at home in Tacoma on July 1, 1990, at ninety-one.
