Juliette Cordelia Hayes

A Prairie Hostess

Juliette Cordelia Hayes was born on November 13, 1834, in New York and married Byron Taylor Loomis on February 17, 1853, in Allen County, Ohio. Over the following decades the couple moved steadily west and north — from Ohio to Fairfax Township, Iowa, by 1870, then to Ellsworth County, Kansas, by the mid-1870s, and eventually to Washington State by the early 1890s. In Kansas, Juliette was an active homemaker and prizewinner, taking home ribbons at the 1882 Ellsworth County Fair for tomato butter, tomato and plum preserves, plum and grape jelly, pumpkin pie, and soft soap. She and Byron also ran the Junction House, a hotel and boarding house in Geneseo, Kansas, where Juliette served as hostess through the late 1880s. In July 1887 she was badly injured when a spooked horse overturned the buggy she and her daughter were riding in, destroying the buggy, though both recovered.

Humptulips

By the mid-1890s Juliette and Byron had settled in Humptulips, in Chehalis (Grays Harbor) County, Washington, where Juliette ran a store that her son Bud eventually purchased from a previous owner in exchange for thirty head of cattle. She remained close to her large family, welcoming her brother Alexis on visits from Iowa and hosting her daughter Clarinda Knox and grandchildren in 1902. In November of that year the Humptulips town band played for Juliette's sixty-eighth birthday. She died in Humptulips around October 1904, in her seventieth year.
