Life story

A Watertown Militia Captain

Josiah Jones was born in 1643 in Roxbury or Watertown, Massachusetts, son of Lewis Jones, and bought a 124-acre farm near Sudbury in 1665. He fought in King Philip's War in 1676 and rose to militia captain, while serving Watertown repeatedly as selectman between 1685 and 1709 and, after the family moved to Weston, as selectman there too. In 1669 Josiah gave court testimony describing a three-mile chase after a man he witnessed breaking into a neighbor's house. He inherited a substantial share of his father-in-law Nathaniel Treadway's estate in 1689 and became a freeman the following year, later serving as one of the first deacons of Weston's church. Josiah died in Weston on October 9, 1714.
