Life story
A Welsh Planter's Estate
Lewis Jones was born around 1600 in Wales or England and emigrated to Massachusetts around 1635, settling first at Watertown Farms before moving to Roxbury around 1640 and back to Watertown by 1650, where he farmed a ten-acre plot. He helped fund Roxbury's free school in 1645 and joined the town's Congregational church under the Reverend John Eliot. In his January 1678 will, later amended to appoint guardians for a son he considered too weak to manage the estate alone, Lewis left everything to his wife and that son, with the remainder to pass to his other children if both should die; he died in Watertown on April 11, 1684, leaving a modest household estate of furniture, bedding, and farm tools valued at just over 62 pounds.
