Life story
A Farmington Constable
Thomas Newell emigrated from Hertfordshire, England, and by March 1645 had purchased land at Tunxis Sepos (Farmington), Connecticut, from William Goodwin and John Crow for 150 pounds, including a house lot and parcels totaling well over a hundred acres in the town's Great Meadow. He was sworn in as Farmington's constable in 1660, became a freeman in 1669, and was counted among the town's eighty-four proprietors in 1672; the following year he signed the petition seeking rights to settle Waterbury, Connecticut, though there is no record he moved there himself. Thomas died on September 13, 1689, without a will; his substantial estate, valued at roughly 700 pounds and including nearly 300 pounds of meadow and upland, was divided among his family by default distribution.
