Life story
A Simsbury Petitioner
Joseph Phelps was born around 1628 in England, son of William Phelps, and crossed the Atlantic with his family in 1630 aboard the Mary and John, settling in Dorchester before the family moved to Windsor, Connecticut, around 1636. He became a freeman in 1664 and, by 1667, had received a land grant in the Weatogue district of Massaco (Simsbury), where he was recorded as a freeman two years later. Joseph joined fellow petitioners in 1677 seeking tax relief to help the colony recover from King Philip's War, and in 1683, when Simsbury's residents could not agree where to build their meeting house, he was among those who agreed to let the colony's leaders settle the question by drawing lots. He died in Simsbury in 1684.
