Life story

A Turkey Hills Farm

Joseph Phelps was born October 9, 1689, in Simsbury, Connecticut, and inherited substantial farmland from his father in Turkey Hills (now East Granby), property that stayed in the family for at least six generations afterward. In his March 1760 will, Joseph made provision for two people he enslaved, a married couple named Zickery and Citty, directing that they not be separated after his death and be allowed to choose which of his family members would inherit them. Joseph died in Turkey Hills on June 18, 1763.
