Life story

From Scotland to Salmon Brook

George Hayes was born in Scotland and, wanting to see London, moved as a young man to live with an uncle in Derbyshire, England, before eventually emigrating to America and settling in Windsor, Connecticut. By 1698 he had bought land at Salmon Brook (now Granby) in Simsbury, becoming a freeman there in 1701 and steadily adding to his holdings — including a 1723 grant of 138 acres from the town. In his April 1725 will, George left his homestead to his wife Abigail for her lifetime, gave his son Benjamin a share of the Salmon Brook sawmill in exchange for caring for him in old age, and divided the remainder of his substantial estate among his other children. George died in Simsbury on September 2, 1725.
