Life story

A Disinherited Son's Own Way

John Brown was born December 2, 1682, in Reading, Massachusetts, and in 1709 was left just five shillings in his father's will, which named him a “stubborn, disobedient, and rebellious son.” John made his own way regardless, working as a wheelwright, yeoman, and husbandman, and by 1711 had moved to Killingly, Connecticut, where he began assembling a substantial landholding — buying and selling dozens of parcels over the following five decades and steadily granting land to his sons John, Stephen, and Nathaniel as they came of age. In 1745 he helped the town of Killingly purchase land to build its meeting house. John died in Killingly on April 12, 1768.
