Life story

From Forgery Conviction to Country Doctor

George Ellison Brown was born around 1795 in Foster, Providence County, Rhode Island, and led an unusually varied life: convicted of forgery in Cayuga County, New York, in June 1819, he was released from prison the following year for good behavior. He went on to marry five times across four decades — in Madison County, New York, in 1816; sometime in the late 1830s; in Woonsocket Falls, Rhode Island, in 1843; again before 1860; and finally in Killingly, Connecticut, in 1870 — and worked variously as a laborer, a shoemaker, and, by the 1840s and 1860s, a practicing physician, known to family as “Papy.” He bought and sold small parcels of land around Foster, Rhode Island, repeatedly through the 1830s and 1840s, including shares inherited from his father's and sister's estates. George died in Killingly, Connecticut, on June 16, 1876, at around eighty-one.
