Life story
An Island on the Connecticut River
Thomas Bird settled first in Ipswich and then Braintree, Massachusetts, in 1639 before moving to Hartford, Connecticut, by 1644, where he owned a home lot and a fourteen-acre island in the Connecticut River across from the town landing — a property substantial enough that Hartford appointed surveyors to formally map its bounds in 1659. He served as Hartford's chimney viewer, responsible for fire safety inspections, in 1653, and appeared as a defendant in several cases before the colony's Particular Court in his final years. Thomas died in the summer of 1662; his estate, appraised at over 149 pounds, was distributed among his wife and four children the following year.
