Life story
A Hartford Leather Sealer
Robert Sanford was baptized November 1, 1615, in Stanstead Mountfitchet, Essex, England, and emigrated to America around 1634, settling in Hartford, Connecticut, where he served for decades in a variety of civic inspection posts — chimney inspector, fence viewer, and repeatedly as leather sealer, certifying the quality of tanned hides sold in the town. He held property in both Hartford and Windsor and was granted eighty acres of undivided land by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1672. In his undated will, Robert left his wife the estate for her lifetime, after which his house and orchard were to go to his son Zachariah and his Hartford home to his son Robert. He died around 1676; his estate was appraised at 414 pounds.
