Life story

A Hartford Chimney-Viewer

Joseph Collier married Elizabeth Sanford in 1667 and served Hartford, Connecticut, as chimney-viewer — an early form of fire inspector — in 1668 and again during 1675–1676, purchasing land there in 1671. In his will, Joseph left his estate to Elizabeth for her lifetime, after which his movable goods were to pass to his daughters and his real estate to his sons. He died in Hartford on November 16, 1691.
