Life story

A Bavarian Midwife in Indiana

Anna Margaretha Rosenberger, called Margaret, was born on April 10, 1827, in Schimborn, in the Mömbris district of Bavaria. Her mother, Margaretha Hartmann, had older children, Margaretha, Maria, Magdalena, and George Adam, by an earlier husband, Paul Rosenberger; Anna Margaretha's own father was Johan Adam Rosenberger. The family sailed from Bremen on the Clementine and landed at Baltimore on July 28, 1840, when she was thirteen, and settled in southeastern Indiana.

On June 20, 1848, in Franklin County, she married Simon Amrhein, a Bavarian farmer. They farmed in Highland Township, then in Kelso Township, Dearborn County, where they belonged to St. Joseph's Church at St. Leon, and from 1867 in Ray Township, Franklin County. She had ten children between 1849 and 1867, among them George (Ben's 2x-great-grandfather), and lost a baby daughter, Anna Marie, in 1860. Alongside all that, she was a midwife who delivered babies for many women in the area. In 1871 she inherited forty acres in Ray Township from her father.

Simon died in 1897, and by 1900 Margaret was living with her son Frank in Ray Township. In April 1909, living near Enochsburg, she was very ill and her daughter Maggie (Mrs. Kramer) came to see her. She died in Ray Township on December 19, 1909, at eighty-two, and was buried at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg.
