Life story

A Swim to Freedom

Simon Amrhein was born on March 10, 1819, in Rottenburg, in the Aschaffenburg district of Bavaria. Family tradition holds that when he was drafted into the German army in the 1830s or 1840s, he buried his uniform and swam out to a departing American-bound ship rather than serve, possibly alongside a relative, Conrad Amrhein. He settled in Franklin County, Indiana, farming there for decades, married Anna Margaretha Rosenberger on June 20, 1848, and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1854. Simon died in Oldenburg, Indiana, on May 9, 1897.
