Life story

A Stonemason of Decatur County

George E. Amrhein was born on April 21, 1852, in Indiana, the son of Bavarian immigrants Simon Amrhein and Anna Margaretha Rosenberger, and baptized at St. Joseph's Church in St. Leon. He worked as a young man in his family's tile yard before becoming a stonemason, and later spent years employed at the Harris City stone quarries in Decatur County. He married Barbara Ann Hahn in Oldenburg, Indiana, on September 12, 1880, and bought several small parcels of farmland in Sandcreek Township over the following decades. George died on October 17, 1906, in Washington Township, Decatur County; his brother Anthony administered his estate.
