Margaret Mary “Maggie” Amrhein

An Indiana Girlhood

Margaret Mary “Maggie” Amrhein was born on October 31, 1892, in Greensburg, Indiana, the daughter of George E. Amrhein and Barbara Hahn. As a young woman she worked as a servant for the family of an Irish traveling dry-goods salesman before marrying Francis Rowan Kelble at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greensburg on September 7, 1915.

A Life on the Move, and in Xenia

Margaret followed Francis through more than a decade of moves dictated by his construction contracts — Columbus, Lima, Philadelphia, back to Xenia, and Philadelphia again — raising three sons along the way and enduring long separations while he worked distant jobs. Once the family settled permanently near Philadelphia, she and Francis kept up the tradition of regular visits back to his parents in Xenia, Ohio, through the 1920s, often for weeks at a stretch. She and Francis celebrated fifty years of marriage together in 1965, wintering in later years in St. Petersburg, Florida, where their small backyard grew bananas and tomatoes. Margaret died in Glenside, Pennsylvania, on December 11, 1988, at ninety-six.
