Life story

A Debt and a Disappearance

George I. Amrhein was born around 1794 in Rottenberg, near Aschaffenburg in Bavaria, and married there on April 27, 1818. In June 1843 he sold his home at auction for 200 florins. According to a story remembered by a fellow villager, Georg had run a small grocery store that fell deeply into debt to a creditor in nearby Goldbach; rather than repay it, he sold his house and fled to America, prompting the creditor to post a 1,000-florin bounty for information leading to his arrest.
