Life story
A Swim to America
Simon Amrhein was born on March 10, 1819, in Rottenburg, in the Aschaffenburg district of Bavaria, the son of George I. Amrhein and Anna Eva Hufgard. Family tradition says that when he was drafted into the army, he buried his uniform and swam out to a ship bound for America; his brother Conrad may have been on the same ship. His sisters Anna Mary and Minnie and his brother George Michael also settled in southeastern Indiana, where Anna Mary married Anton Hartmann and Minnie married Michael Kuhn.
Simon settled in Franklin County, Indiana, and on June 20, 1848, he married Anna Margaretha Rosenberger, a Bavarian girl who had come over with her family in 1840. In 1850 they were farming in Highland Township. On September 3, 1854, Simon became an American citizen at the Dearborn County court. By 1860 they had a forty-acre farm in Kelso Township, Dearborn County, worth $850, and belonged to St. Joseph's Church at St. Leon, where their children were baptized. Those children were Wendel (1849), Lena (1850), George (1852, Ben's 2x-great-grandfather), Adam (1853), Adam Joseph (1854), Maggie (1857), Anna Marie (1860), who died as a baby, Frank (1861), Anthony (1862), and Mary Appolonia (1867); the family also raised an adopted daughter, Anna Eisenhart.
In 1867 the family moved to a 112-acre farm in Ray Township, Franklin County, near Oldenburg, which they held until 1882. Simon died at Oldenburg on May 9, 1897, and his son George came from Decatur County for the funeral. He was buried in the Holy Family Church cemetery at Oldenburg. In his records his name was spelled every way a clerk could manage: Emerine, Amrhine, Amshine, Ameraen.
