Life story
A Falls Fight Soldier
Thomas Wells, son of the weaver Thomas Welles, likely emigrated from England to Boston around 1635 and settled in Hartford, Connecticut, by 1636, later moving to Hadley, Massachusetts, by 1659. He served the Connecticut colony as an assistant magistrate in the late 1660s and, as a soldier under Captain William Turner, fought in the brutal Falls Fight of May 1676 during King Philip's War, one of the war's decisive and bloodiest engagements. He rose to militia captain and owned land in both Hadley and Wethersfield in addition to property back in England. Thomas died in Hadley in the fall of 1676.
