Life story
A Weaver's Last Wishes
Thomas Welles was born around 1595 in England and worked as a weaver in Evesham, Worcestershire, taking on at least one apprentice. In his will, written February 9, 1637, shortly before his death, Thomas forgave a five-pound debt his own father owed him and left his father a further annuity, while providing for his children Thomas, Mary, and John — including a provision for a fourth child in case his wife Frances was pregnant when he died — and distributing small remembrances of a few shillings each to godchildren, in-laws, and neighbors. He left his brothers-in-law John and Richard Albright his cloak and best coat, respectively, and asked that five shillings be given to the poor of the parish.
