Life story

A Soldier of the Great Swamp Fight

James Eno was born October 30, 1651, in Windsor, Connecticut, and as a young man fought in King Philip's War, serving under Captain Samuel Marshall and taking part in the brutal Great Swamp Fight of December 1675. He went on to serve Windsor as constable, tax lister, and juryman, and — like his father before him — joined a 1673 protest against the preaching of the town's minister, Reverend Chauncey. James built a substantial landholding through gifts, inheritance, and purchase, and was frequently trusted to help settle other men's estates; a contemporary, Bissell, described him as “a man of sound judgment, as well as a man of property.” James wrote his will in June 1709 and died in Windsor on July 16, 1714.
