Born Abt in France. He married January 29, 1253 or 1254, at Fougeres, to Jeanne de Fougeres. He died After August 25, 1270, during the Eighth Crusade.

Life story

Family Background

Hugh XII of Lusignan was born around 1235–1240, son of Hugh XI of Lusignan and Yolande of Brittany.

Inheritance

On his father's death in 1250 Hugh inherited the lordships of Lusignan, Couhé, and Peyrat along with the counties of La Marche and Angoulême, giving him substantial influence across southwestern France.

Marriage

Hugh married Jeanne de Fougères, daughter of Raoul III, seigneur of Fougères, on January 29, 1253 or 1254, at Fougères. The marriage produced six children, including his eventual successor Hugh XIII.

Crusade and Death

Like his father before him, Hugh joined a French king's crusade to Egypt, accompanying Louis IX on the Eighth Crusade in 1270. He died that year in one of the campaign's early engagements, and his eldest son succeeded to his titles.
