Hugues XI de Lusignan ★

Born Abt in France. He married January 1236, to Yolande of Brittany. He died April 6, 1250, at the Battle of Fariskur, during the Seventh Crusade.

Family Background

Hugh XI of Lusignan was born around 1221 into the House of Lusignan, half-brother of King Henry III of England through their shared mother, Isabelle of Angoulême, the former queen consort of England.

Inheritance

Hugh succeeded his mother as Count of Angoulême in 1246 and his father, Hugh X of Lusignan, as Count of La Marche in 1249, uniting the two counties under his rule.

Marriage

In January 1236 Hugh married Yolande of Brittany, daughter of Peter I, Duke of Brittany. The couple had seven children, including Hugh XII, who would inherit his father's titles; Yolande never remarried after Hugh's death.

Crusade and Death

Hugh joined Louis IX of France on the Seventh Crusade in 1249, and was killed on April 6, 1250, at the Battle of Fariskur in Egypt, one of the crusade's final major engagements. His son Hugh XII inherited his French domains.
