Life story

A Traveling Tradesman

Francis Rowan Kelble was born on December 3, 1892, in Xenia, Ohio, the son of Amon E. Kelble and Sarah Rowan, and graduated from St. Brigid's Parish High School in 1908 as one of only four in his class, delivering a commencement speech on Cuba's progress under American administration. He entered the plumbing and heating trade around 1908 and spent the next fifteen years following major construction contracts around the country as a steamfitter — working on the water system at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama in 1912, and on large jobs in Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Baltimore over the years that followed, with his family relocating repeatedly to Logansport and Greensburg, Indiana; Lima and Columbus, Ohio; and Philadelphia to follow the work.

Building a Business

Francis married Margaret Mary Amrhein at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greensburg, Indiana, on September 7, 1915. By the mid-1920s he had settled the family in the Philadelphia area for good, running his own mechanical contracting firm, Frank R. Kelble Co., before becoming vice-president and general manager of the Huffman-Wolfe Factory Heating & Plumbing Company from 1930 to 1948, and later president of the Mechanical Contractors Association. He became a leading figure in his industry's professional society, the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, serving on convention committees through the 1950s and receiving a lifetime membership in 1958.

Family and Faith

Through the 1920s the family made regular trips back to Xenia to visit Francis's parents, often leaving his sons with their grandparents for whole summers. Francis was active for decades in the Knights of Columbus, serving as a director of its Glenside, Pennsylvania home association, and belonged to the Franklin Institute and the Navy League. He and Margaret celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a Mass at St. Luke's in 1965. Francis died at his home in St. Petersburg Beach, Florida, on April 7, 1969; his requiem Mass was held back in Glenside at St. Luke the Evangelist.
