Life story

A Merchant's Brief Colony

Hendrick Ruloffzen Kip was born in 1576, son of Ruloff Kype, and worked as a prominent merchant in Amsterdam, active in the Dutch Company of Foreign Countries, which explored the Americas seeking a northwest passage to Asia — family tradition, though unproven, holds that he helped arrange Henry Hudson's famous voyage. Hendrick briefly emigrated to New Amsterdam with his family around 1635 but returned to the Netherlands within a few years.
