Life story
A Merchant's Conversion
Ruloff Kype was born in 1544 in France, the son of the squire Ruloff de Kype, and fled with his father and brothers to the Netherlands in 1562 after Protestant forces burned the family's château. Educated by monks at the cathedrals where the family sought refuge during their exile, Ruloff nonetheless converted from Catholicism to Protestantism and settled in Amsterdam, where he built a career as a wealthy merchant. He died in 1596, leaving his fortune to his son Hendrick.
