Life story

A Loyalist's New Start

Isaac Kipp was born November 1, 1764, in New York, and left the newly independent United States around 1783 with the United Empire Loyalists, unwilling to fight against Britain and Canada; he and his family eventually settled permanently in Upper Canada around 1800, likely drawn by the promise of cheap land. He took up poor bush land a few miles east of Woodstock, Ontario, chosen because its pine cover was easier to clear than hardwood, and by 1801 was farming in Blenheim Township with a yoke of oxen, two cows, and basic implements. Isaac served in the Oxford County militia, including its First Flank Company during the War of 1812.

Building a Burford Farm

Over the following three decades, Isaac steadily bought and patented land in Burford and Oxford Townships, Ontario — including two hundred acres on Dundas Street in 1810 and further parcels through the 1820s — dividing much of it among his sons David, John, James, and Richard Titus as they came of age. He voted in Oxford County's 1824 election and farmed into old age; by 1846 his modest remaining livestock included a yearling steer, two calves, a yoke of oxen, three horses, and five sheep. Isaac died in Burford Township on August 6, 1846, his personal property valued at just over 106 pounds.
