Life story
Accused of Slander in New Amsterdam
Tryntje “Catherine” Lubberts was born around 1599 in Zwolle, Netherlands, orphaned by twenty-five, and married Hendrick Hendricksen Kip in Amsterdam in 1624, emigrating with him and their five children to New Netherland around 1637. Tryntje was twice hauled before New Amsterdam's court for speaking too freely: in 1644 she was ordered to publicly retract slander she had spoken against a neighbor, and in 1646 she was charged with calling Director Willem Kieft and his council “false judges,” a remark her husband defended as the product of distress after witnessing an assassination attempt on the colony's leader. She died sometime after 1665 in New York City.
