A Burford Township Farmer

Benjamin Kipp was born on March 26, 1811, in Burford Township, Brant County, Upper Canada, and farmed there for most of his life, building his hundred-acre holding on Lot 21 into a productive operation of wheat, oats, peas, and maple sugar, and later serving as a road overseer and justice of the peace. He kept his savings hidden somewhere around his house, and when his two eldest sons, Hamilton and Isaac, took that money to fund their journey to the west coast around 1858, Benjamin disowned them — only to welcome them back and accept repayment several times over when they returned to visit. Benjamin died in September 1890 near Princeton, Ontario, and was buried at the Princeton Burying Ground.
