Life story

Family Background

Juliana FitzMaurice was born April 12, 1263, in Dublin, daughter of Maurice FitzGerald, 3rd Lord of Offaly and Justiciar of Ireland, and Maud de Prendergast, tracing her lineage back through her mother to figures including Niall of the Nine Hostages and Brian Boru. She had a sister, Amabel, and was first cousin to John FitzGerald, 1st Earl of Kildare.

First Marriage: Thomas de Clare

At just twelve years old, in February 1275, Juliana married Thomas de Clare, Lord of Thomond and Governor of Colchester and London, about eighteen years her senior; the couple had four children, including Maud de Clare, who later married Robert de Clifford, 1st Baron de Clifford. Thomas died August 29, 1287, leaving Juliana a widow at twenty-four.

Second and Third Marriages

Juliana next married Nicholas Avenel, who died before December 1291, and then married Adam de Cretynges on or after February 16, 1292.

Death and Legacy

Juliana died September 29, 1300, around age thirty-seven. Through her daughter Maud's line she became an ancestor of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland, and, generations further on, of the British royal family.
