Life story

A Hampshire Yeoman's Will

John White held half a virgate of land in Timsbury, Hampshire, England, owned by St. Mary's Abbey of Westminster, land he inherited from his father in 1530 along with household goods including brass pots and pans. In his own will, written in January 1579, John asked to be buried in the Timsbury churchyard and left small bequests to the local church and poor box, along with more substantial sums to his six surviving children — his son John receiving the bulk of the remaining estate. John died in February 1580, owing his brother Robert nine pounds along with several smaller debts.
