Family Background

Euphemia de Clavering was born around 1266, daughter and eventual heiress of Robert fitzRoger, 1st Baron Clavering, lord of Warkworth Castle in Northumberland, and Margaret la Zouche.

Marriage and Children

Euphemia married Ranulph Neville, 1st Baron Neville of Raby, and the couple had fourteen children. Their eldest son, Robert Neville, earned the epithet "Peacock of the North" but was slain in a border skirmish outside Berwick before his father's death. Their second son, Ralph Neville, succeeded as 2nd Baron Neville. Other children included Sir Alexander Neville; John Neville, killed at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333; and Thomas Neville, who became Archdeacon of Durham.

Legacy

Through her son Ralph, Euphemia became grandmother to the Ralph Neville who commanded the English victory at the Battle of Neville's Cross in 1346, cementing her family's place among the great powers of the north of England.
