Life story

Repopulating Schimborn

Wilhelm Rosenberger was born around 1620 in Heidenfeld, in the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg (now Germany), and served as a bodyguard and personal huntsman for high-ranking officers in the Imperial Army during the Thirty Years' War. According to local legend, the village of Schimborn was nearly wiped out by famine and plague between 1633 and 1635, leaving only a single survivor; after the war ended, Wilhelm moved there from Cologne around 1655 with his wife and at least one child, among those who helped resettle the devastated village. He died around 1680 in Schimborn.
