Margaret “Peg” Hurley, also recorded as Herlihy, was born in Ireland — family record locates her origins in “the bogs of Ireland” — and married Isaiah Brown in August 1761 at the First Church in Killingly, Connecticut. The family's own records list her occupation simply as “witch,” likely reflecting a local reputation or folk legend attached to her rather than a literal trade; she was still living in Killingly as late as 1820.
