Life story

A Widow's Remarriage

Aefje “Eva” Albertsen Bradt was born in January 1633 in Amsterdam and baptized at the city's Evangelical Lutheran Church, emigrating that October with her family aboard the ship Rensselaerswyck to the Dutch colony of Rensselaerswyck, reaching Fort Orange in April 1637. She first married Anthony de Hooges, and when she remarried Roeloff Swartwout in 1657, Dutch custom classified her children by her first husband as orphans, formally placed in the care of her brother and brother-in-law with a 100-guilder settlement. Eva moved with Roeloff to Esopus around 1660, where the couple worshiped at the Wiltwyck Dutch Reformed Church. She died around 1689 in Hurley, Ulster County, New York.
