Life story
A Wilmington Schoolman
Abial Carpenter was born May 27, 1708, in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, and later settled in Connecticut, serving in 1774 on the school committee for Wilmington's ninth district and personally paying a local teacher's wages that July. In his December 1759 will, Abial divided his property in detailed fashion among his children — his son Abraham receiving only modest goods, having already inherited half his own grandfather's estate — and provided his wife use of the whole estate until their children reached adulthood. In 1781 Abial deeded his remaining Wilmington property to his son Nathan for 300 pounds.
