Life story
A Newark Highway Overseer
Obadiah Force was born around 1691 in Gravesend, Long Island, New York, and settled in New Jersey, where he was twice chosen as a highway overseer for Newark, in 1765 and 1767. He appeared in court on several occasions over the years — sued over a debt in 1735, charged for unpaid wheat in 1751, and facing a misdemeanor charge before the crown in 1755 — and in 1750 accompanied a hunting party in which one of his companions was fatally injured. Obadiah died around 1789 in Essex County, New Jersey.
