Life story

A Cordwainer of Woodbridge

Thomas Force was born September 13, 1673, in Gravesend, Long Island, New York, and served in 1692 as a sergeant in Captain George Bradshaw's Queens County militia company. He moved to Westchester, New York, around 1698 to be closer to his mother's family, swearing allegiance to King William there that year, and by 1713 had settled in Woodbridge, New Jersey, where he worked as a cordwainer, making leather shoes. In 1720 his brother Matthew deeded him twenty-five acres of land in Woodbridge. Thomas died around 1722.
