Life story

A Strict Household

Rachel Lazansky was born around 1874–1877 in the Łomża region of Russian Poland and immigrated to the United States with her parents as a girl, sometime in the late 1880s or 1890s. She married Louis Vigotsky (Rosen) and raised their large family on Manhattan's Lower East Side and later in Brooklyn. Her granddaughter Eleanor Rackow left a vivid, unsparing memory of her: “Grandma Rae had more children than she could handle, displayed affection for none, was a compulsive cleaner, and each and every day cooked the identical menu... meatballs and potatoes,” keeping beds “squared at the corners and pulled tight” like an army barracks. Rachel died in Brooklyn on April 1, 1940.
