Life story

Elka

Elsie Mayes, also called Elka, was the wife of Abraham Lazansky and the mother of Rachel (Rae) Lazansky, Ben's great-great-grandmother, who was born in the Łomża area of Russian Poland around 1874 to 1877. The family came to America when Rae was a girl, probably around 1887 or 1888. Elsie's other daughters included Lena, who married Noah Schlossberg, and another who married a man named Rosengarten. Rae went on to raise more than a dozen children on the Lower East Side. Elsie's dates have not been found; family information says she is buried with her husband somewhere in New York City.
