Life story

A Manhattan Engraver

Jacob “Jack” E. Rose was born around 1900–1901 in Manhattan, the American-born son of Russian and Polish Jewish immigrants Louis Rosen and Rachel Lazansky; he took the name Jack after his sister began dating a man of the same first name. He trained as an engraver as a teenager and spent his whole working life in the trade — copper-plate and, later, hand engraving for wedding invitations and high-end embossed stationery from an office on Nassau Street in lower Manhattan, working for clients including MetLife. He married Esther “Stella” Kutner in Brooklyn on August 19, 1924. His niece remembered him as a man of “natural artistic ability” who “loved classical music,” and he was still working — one of his best months on record, despite a hand grown unsteady with age — in the summer of 1977, in his late seventies.
