Life story

From Russia to the Lower East Side

Louis Vigotsky — also recorded as Louis Rosen, the surname his American family used — was born around 1873–1875 in Russia, possibly near Minsk. Family lore held he left after getting a girl pregnant. He arrived in Manhattan on September 17, 1888, and spent the rest of his working life as a tailor and garment operator on the Lower East Side, filing for naturalization in 1899 and briefly running an illegal saloon after Prohibition began. His voter registration tracked a leftward political journey — Socialist Party in the 1910s, Democratic in the 1920s and '30s, American Labor Party by the late 1930s. His granddaughter Eleanor Widmer remembered him as “a socialist, follower of Norman Thomas; open-hearted to all.”
